2 Days to Go Christmas Eve Eve
Did you know that December 24th marks the exact 200th anniversary? The song came out in 1818 and it feels like its been around longer let's take a look at one of the most famous Christmas carols.
The song was written in a hurry according to this from Colorado Public Radio : It was Christmas Eve Day in Oberndorf, Austria. A brand new church called "Saint Nicholas Church" was getting ready for their big day. Just as if anything could go wrong the organ broke. They couldn't get it fix a in time and guess what? Yeah Christmas Eve midnight mass was coming and they had no way for music. Joseph Mohr , the assistant pastor had to figure out what to do. He had a poem that was perfect for Christmas. He talked to the organist named Franz Gruber he wanted him to set it to music that wasn't an organ. He composed it quicky and "Silent Night" was born.
The song spread around Europe and made it to Russia and the United States as well. Overtime, people forgot who wrote the song it wasn't until 1995 the Mohr was rediscovered as the writer of the song. The song was originally in German the English version we know here in English speaking land was put together by Episcopal Priest, John Freeman Young in New York. His version is the one that is most sung in the English world today.
The original German lyrics were :
Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Alles schläft; einsam wacht
Nur das traute hochheilige Paar.
Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar,
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!
Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Hirten erst kundgemacht
Durch der Engel Halleluja,
Tönt es laut von fern und nah:
Christ, der Retter ist da!
Christ, der Retter ist da!
Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Gottes Sohn, o wie lacht
Lieb' aus deinem göttlichen Mund,
Da uns schlägt die rettende Stund'.
Christ, in deiner Geburt!
Christ, in deiner Geburt!
This carol is a Christmas tradition because of it's simpleness and it's gets us to slow down and remember what Christmas is about.
